It seems, here in the UK, the BBC are really rubbing their hands with glee about it all kicking off in the Big Brother house. Ok, it’s been a quiet news week - last night our main news was all about strong winds … wow, hold the front page! But there’s an irritating gloating that has stretched the story out far, far too long … see here.
It seemed more like bullying to me. Actually, if there was a racist undertone to it - I feel it was driven by the ignorance of some quite stupid people in the BB house. Jade Goody said she made the comments about Indian food because, “She is Indian, [I was] thinking of an Indian name and [the] only thing I could think of was Indian food” That’s just plain ignorant - racist, I’m not sure?
The fact of the matter is - racism (or ignorance) hasn’t gone away. When you are in the cosy environments of a BBC Newsroom (I was for 12 years) you genuinely think there are no longer people who are right wing, racist, homophobic etc … Because in your circle of colleagues, people think about what they say and, frankly, there is a natural bent to the left.
So, that the BBC are surprised by the comments and that 30,000 people have supposedly complained is remarkable. Not remarkable because people find these borderline racist remarks offensive (I’m glad they do). But it’s remarkable that they find it surprising - I’m sure no Indians watching Big Brother have been surprised!
And then - in wade the politicians with an excuse to talk to ‘real people’. Here is a really interesting thread from talking about the borderline irritation/frustration in the UK. But once the tide of emotion changes towards Channel 4’s big cash cow of recent years the sponsors walk away (here).
