“*fire fighting mode”.  Andrew Point has been working in the direct mail business for over 9 years.  In that time he has endeared himself to no-one.  The people who respect Andrew can be counted on one hand.  Scratch that – one finger.  We’ve all had bosses like Andrew.  Men of few ideas, loud voices and muffin top bellies surging over the tops of their cheap off-the-peg suits.  I hate Andrew, yet Andrew is only fictional.  Andrew has read one classic novel in his life and quotes it endlessly especially to the women of a more pretty nature in his team.

 
This is how Andrew would use today’s plooptionary phrase, “You guys are doing brilliantly at the moment, we’ve kept our heads above water through the big April DM landing, our back end has held it’s own despite having a really high load BUT we’re not out of fire fighting mode just yet.  Keep it up”

 True to form ‘fire fighting mode’ is a phrase that infers the user is aware of a problem but is offing no solutions.  Bluster perfected!
