Now i’ve tried to enjoy spending time in Second Life… believe me i’ve tried.
i’ve spent a laborious, painful hour or two trying to summon up the enthusiasm to create an avator… only to be reduced to admitting defeat and wandering around looking like one of the generic types… i flew around a bit which wasn’t half as much fun as reading about the idea of flying around a bit. In fact, it was just a bit dull and a bit pointless - and like a badly executed video game. I looked at the most popular places to visit - these were, predictably, casinos, nightclubs and adult entertainment venues… i flew to some, i transported to others. They too were dull, soulless and pointless. There are actually people, lots of people “dancing”… are they really enjoying themself i thought? This “dancing” they’re doing equates to little more than tapping a couple of keys on their keyboard… and then seeing their avator frugging away on screen. How can that be fun?
I joined a discussion - a group of other avators sitting around discussing property prices in second life. That wasn’t fun either.
I’d love to be convinced. Really i would. But i can’t shrug off the feeling that the reality of this virtual reality is shuddering nonsense - and the only really winners are PR agencies and marketeers who’ve found a new tune to play and stick to beat us with.
But please… convince me i’m wrong.
Who, of the Ploop community has ever had a good experience in Second Life? The gauntlet is thrown. Please do pick it up.
